We would like to raise awareness to our patients, their families and communities about men’s health in this month. Movember (a portmanteau of the Australian-English diminutive word for moustache, “mo”, and “November”) is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.
In the US, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. Across the country, there are more than 3 million men living with and beyond the disease. Many are dealing with serious side effects from treatment
Testicular cancer has a 95% survival rate. But that’s of no comfort to the 1 man in 20 who doesn’t make it.
Globally, on average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day. Around the world, the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high: 6 out of 10 suicides are men.
The donations raised in Australia fund programs run directly by Movember (through an open request for proposals process) and men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue. Together, the three channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with our strategic goals.
